Persistent Effects of Teacher-Student Gender Matches

چکیده
We exploit data from middle schools in Seoul, South Korea, where students and teachers are randomly assigned to classrooms, and find that female students taught by a female versus a male teacher score higher on standardized tests compared to male students even four years later. We also find that having a female math teacher in 7th grade increases the likelihood that female students take higher-level math courses, aspire to a STEM degree, and attend a STEM-focused high school. These effects are driven by changes in students’ attitudes and choices.

Department of Quantitative Social Science Akin to my teacher: Does caste, religious or gender distance between student and teacher matter? Some evidence from India
This paper uses a unique data set from 5028 primary school children in rural India to examine whether the demographic interactions between students and teachers influence student outcomes and whether social distance between student and teacher exacerbates gender, caste and religious gaps in children’s achievement. One would expect this to be the case if discrimination and/or role model effects ...

In the United States, girls outperform boys in measures of reading achievement while generally underperforming in science and mathematics. One major class of explanations for these gaps involves the gender-based interactions between students and teachers (e.g., role-model and Pygmalion effects). However, the evidence on whether these interactions actually matter is limited and contradictory. In...

Students’ educational outcomes are predicted by their non-cognitive characteristics, including Big Five personality domains. While theories of teaching and learning suggest that teacher non-cognitive characteristics also impact student outcomes, such characteristics are rarely studied systematically. We propose that the Big Five personality domains of teachers are associated with teacher effect...

متن کاملA teacher like me or a student like me? Role model versus teacher bias effect
Several studies have found that teacher–student gender matching has positive effects on student achievement. However, the underlying mechanisms that explain this effect have not been empirically explored. This paper studies the impact of same gender teachers on academic achievement for a large sample of 8th graders in Chile. I provide evidence that girls benefit from being assigned to female te...
